Nuln Oil is probably one of the most useful washes you can have on the painting desk. It's brilliant for picking out recesses, adding definition and giving metallics a darker, more weathered appearance.

If you're getting back into miniature painting after a few years away, this is one of the products that makes the whole process feel much easier. A decent basecoat followed by a controlled wash can add an enormous amount of depth without needing particularly advanced painting skills.

Nuln Oil is a black acrylic shade paint from Citadel's Shade range, designed to flow into the recesses of miniatures and add definition and depth. It's particularly effective over metallics, armour, weapons and darker colour schemes.

Nuln Oil is particularly effective when applied selectively into recesses rather than simply covering an entire model. Over metallic paints, it can quickly turn a clean silver or gunmetal finish into something darker and more suitably grimy.

For a cleaner result, let your basecoat dry completely before applying the shade and avoid overloading the brush. Once dry, you can bring the raised areas back up with your original colours and add highlights for a much more controlled finish.
